Hi Bloggers,
This time, i want to share about my Job as a Caregiver or Nanny or Au Pair. I came to Canada in 2014 with Visitor Visa. But my Fiance had a skilled job, so he could attach me to his visa and i could apply for an Open Work Permit in Canada. My background is a Teacher. Back in Indonesia, I was a Kindergarten Teacher and Piano Teacher since 2005. If you want to work as a Teacher in Canada, you have to go back to the College and take Canadian Teaching Degree. Canada doesn't recognize a degree from other Country (except US i guess). So i couldn't teach in Canada.
Because i was working as a Kindergarten Teacher, I decided to work as a Nanny for a while. I wanted to do that because it's related to my background, working with kids. I really love working with Kids so i had no problem to work as a Nanny. Don't get me wrong, become a Nanny isn't easy as you think. Most of Families here in Canada want an Educational Nanny not just random Nanny. If you have a Teaching background, thats a Plus Point for you. They also want somebody who has Experience working as Nanny for few years. At that time, I didn't have any experience working as a Nanny but i got 9 years experience working as a Kindergarten Teacher.
Some family might want you to have a CPR and First Aid too. And again, I was Lucky. I don't have those things and My family i work with don't really care about those things. Become a Nanny doesn't mean you just have to watch the Kids all day. You have to be Creative. You should do something fun with the Kids such as Go to the Park, Library, Make arts and crafts with them, Read for them, etc. I did all of them things to the Kids i look after.
The first time i became a Nanny, I was looking after a Toddler. She was 1 year old at that time and She was super cute. She copied everything I said. So you have to be careful with that year, because they will imitate you. I worked there for a year and moved to other city and work with other Family. I was still on my Open work permit at that time, but, because my open work permit was expired in June 2016, I had to find a new employer who are willing to sponsor me and give me an LMIA to work in Canada.
What is LMIA?
LMIA is Labour Market Impact Assessment. This is a document that an Employer in Canada may need to get before hiring a foreign worker. Employers have to post the job offer on job vacancies website such as Indeed, Kijiji, Jobbank, etc. If there's no Canadian citizen and Canadian PR applying for the job, then the employers can get the positive LMIA.
Back to my story. I finally found a new employer who were willing to sponsor me. She was a single mom with 3 kids, 7 year old girl and 5 year old twin boys. So i moved there and We had to do all that crap paperwork. Lucky me, I got my LMIA less than 3 weeks, when other people had to wait for their LMIA up to 6 months! After i got my LMIA, i applied for Work Permit. It took 100 days to process my work permit. This work permit is different to open work permit. Open work permit allows you to work anywhere as anything you want. Work permit with LMIA only allows you to work with the employer who are sponsoring you. So, I got my LMIA in beginning of April, Applied for Work Permit in the end of April, and I got my work permit in the end of August. So in total, i got my work permit in 4 months. One factor that made me got my LMIA fast was probably people who were applying for the job that my employer posted were not credible with that job. Also, I was already in Canada and have worked as a Nanny and had experience as Kindergarten Teacher for years.
So, if you guys want to try to work as a Nanny, if you like to work with kids, if you like to have fun with kids, here are some website that you might find jobs to become a Nanny.
